Karaikal Port has been instrumental in converting the macro socio-economic development that the port stimulates, to the greater benefit of the immediate neighbourhoods. Karaikal Port aims at empowering the communities around with a host of social development activities structured to improve the vital socio-economic parameters.


Karaikal Port has been working closely with the education department in improving the quality of education by supporting educational institutions and students' community. The schools were provided with infrastructure that enhances the teaching & learning ambience and students were assisted with conveyance, school uniforms, notebooks & other stationery items on an yearly basis. 'After school' study centres established at the villages guides children to revise their lessons in a stimulating environment.

Dr APJ Kalam Science and Technology Foundation- A Joint Initiative of Karaikal port & Space Kidz India

The foundation is a tribute to Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam and towards realizing his dreams of creating opportunities and interest for young aspiring minds in latest technology, space exploration to become next generation scientists, engineers and real-world problem solvers and entrepreneurs

As part of this program, DrKalam Innovation Kids Expo was organized on July 20th 2018 at Government Polytechnic College, Varichikudy. The selected students will receive free one-year training and hands on experience in the field of Aerospace, Robotics and electronics.

Karaikal Port organizes number of events and competitions in neighbouring schools including Environment Day, Children's Day, Annual Day Celebrations, Independence day etc. These events generate a lot of excitement and motivation among children.

Summer Camps during the school vacation have been a regular feature in our annual CSR calendar.

Our health programmes are aimed at providing quality healthcare facilities to people living in the villages. The port has established three village health centres that provide free treatment, consultation & medicines. Apart from these centers Karaikal Port also organizes specialized medical camps on regular basis in collaboration with reputed hospitals & research institutes.

Karaikal Port's ambulance is being widely used for the public service to transfer emergency cases.

Karaikal Port has been contributing towards the improvement of infrastructure in the neighbouring areas. The Port has helped the local communities in construction of toilets, provision of safe drinking water facilities, places of worship and dump bins at public places.

Karaikal Port has been assisting women from the neighborhood villages by organizing them into Self Help Groups (SHGs) and supports them in their endeavour towards self reliance. Over 100 women split into 5 groups have taken up special training in SHG management and has been involved in small economic ventures that generates supplementary income for their family. These groups successfully manage the economic ventures and saves money to re-invest in other profitable activities. This initiative has increased the self confidence of the women folk.

Based on demands in the job market, short term skill training were organized for local youth.

Karaikal Port in association with Government ITI, Karaikal has conducted a three months training on JCB operation & maintenance. Twenty youth who had completed the course have secured jobs locally and abroad.

Youth from Vanjore village of Karaikal were sponsored to undergo four wheeler driving training.



Karaikal Port accords high priority to environment compliances and has put in place a state-of-the-art environmental and pollution control systems & processes.

Karaikal port is poised to have most modern port infrastructure with better and advanced facilities of environmental protection systems such as Dust Suppression system, Water sprinklers, Ultra Violet Resistance Net, Wind Shield cover, Tarpaulin coverage of various cargo on transit via road and rail etc.

Green belt is being developed through tall and fast growing variety of trees. Nearly 40,000 trees were planted in the Port premises. This is a major go-green initiative taken by any Port sector in India within the initial years of operations.

'Green Kalam', a mega environment friendly initiative spearheaded by Padmashree Actor Vivekh with the active support of Karaikal port has successfully completed plantation of more than 1 million tree saplings across Tamil Nadu. The continued support of Karaikal port to this movement has helped achieve the desire of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam to plant 10 lakh saplings across Tamil Nadu.

It all began when Dr. Kalam asked Actor Vivekh to campaign against global warming by planting green saplings all over Tamil Nadu and the actor instantly agreed. This set the stage for the launch of Green Kalam project. Actor Vivekh began the project with active support of Karaikal Port and named it after Dr. Kalam.

Karaikal port has planted 25,000 saplings at MARG Swarnabhoomi and another 25000 at Karaikal Port as part of this initiative. The first phase of Green Kalam tree sapling drive culminated with a grand celebration, where Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Former President of India have planted the millionth tree sapling at Cuddalore and spoke on the importance of planting tree saplings as an investment for our future generations.

Dr.Kalam appreciated the efforts of the Green Kalam team its supporters and distributed certificates of appreciation to those enthusiastically involved in the initiative.

Karaikal port’s involvement in this endeavor is part of the Group’s philosophy to constantly improve of our environment.



Karaikal Port responds to natural calamities such as floods & cyclone to provide much needed relief and rehabilitation for neighbourhood. The port's response has been immediate & timely to console and support the victims with necessary food grains, clothes, vessels, school books, uniforms etc. This support helped the families to bounce back to normalcy.

Fans & steel almirahs were distributed to 8 families affected by fire accident at Nagore in 2011 Fire accident at K. Vanjore:Karaikal Port constructed temporary shelter for the affected families in 2011
20 kgs. of rice was distributed to 661 families affected by flood in November 2010 10 kgs. of rice distributed to 535 families affected by flood in November 2009


Employee's voluntary engagement is the strength of Karaikal Port's CSR programme. Many of the successful interventions have this formula of collective planning and concerted effort. Apart from employee's participation in the regular CSR programmes, there were programmes planned & executed exclusively by employees themselves.

Blood donation camp was organized in association with Puducherry AIDS control society on 3rd March 2011, werein 55 employees donated blood.


"Knowledge Connectivity" to empower rural populace - A partnership project between Karaikal Port & MSSRF

Exchanging of MoU for 'Knowledge Connectivity'

The project titled "Knowledge Connectivity for providing Integrated Agricultural and Micro-Enterprises Advisories" is a joint initiative by Karaikal Port & MSSRF. This unique program aims to utilize positive aspects of science for the good of the society. The project targets a geographical spread of 12 – 15 km radius of Karaikal Port directly impacting lives of 30,000 population in Karaikal & Nagapattinam districts conducted in two phases from Nov 2011 - Mar 2013 and Sep 2013 - Apr 2015. This project has addressed the gap between "scientific knowhow" and "field level do how" using different Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools. The project provides need based locale specific demand driven dynamic information in vernacular language using various communication methods such as audio messaging on mobiles, phone-in-programmes, capacity building training, fortnightly news papers, help line etc, for the target groups of farmers fishermen and self-help women groups.
