Karaikal Port Invests 600 Cr in Mechanization

Karaikal Port announced an invested of 600 Cr in Mechanization for Bulk Material handling system, which will increase productivity, improve economy and vastly improve the protection of environment. Press meet took place in June 2018.

Mechanization will improve and enhance the bulk cargo handling at the port in an automated and efficient manner. This process will offer the most convenient trade and efficient operations for the East Coast of India.

“We have taken steps to enhance the efficiency of the port by integrating the mechanization process for smooth and environment friendly bulk cargo handling. Inspite of a dip in the GDP growth, we have invested 600 cr in Mechanization for improving the port operations. We believe this is our biggest responsibility towards the people especially in Karaikal and Nagapattinam districts.” said Mr. GRK Reddy, Promoter Director of Karaikal Port.

FLSmidth & Co, Rice Lake Weighing Systems India Limited, ABB, Chennai Radha Engineering, ASB Infra and Siemens are involved in the implementation process, supply, and integration and commissioning of the equipments under this project.

The mechanization envisages direct unloading through a ship unloader and handled through a conveyor automatic stacker-cum-re-claimer. The process helps in the auto-loading system into wagons and trucks. The mechanization procedures will ease the bulk cargo handling steps in the port, by ensuring zero handling loss.

Through mechanization, the port is expected to facilitate de-congestion, faster discharge of bulk cargo, strengthening and deepening of berths -3rd and 4th,, faster turnaround of vessels, reducing supply chain and logistics cost of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry states.
