Karaikal Port Private Limited (KPPL) has achieved a milestone by handling the first Cape Size Vessel, MV Berge Mcclintock, signifying preparedness for global competition. With its fully mechanised system, 77,381 metric tonnes of steam coal for Adani Enterprises Limited was handled by the port on Monday. The feat coincided with the port’s 13 years of successful operations. “V. Raghunandan, Chief Executive Officer, KPPL, said the port was gearing up to set higher benchmarks in the coming months.”

Cape size vessels are handled only at select ports in India due to restrictions on length, beam, and draft. Karaikal Port’s capability to handle large vessels will hugely benefit trade by bringing down the freight costs and making them more competitive globally, a press release said.

Karaikal Port is currently handling a wide cargo mix varying from iron ore, steel bars, coal, fertilizers, sand, raw sugar, wheat, limestone and gypsum. With excellent hinterland connectivity and through its state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities, Karaikal Port, in the near future, was poised to become the most preferred one in South India, the release said.

Karaikal Port - Handles Fertilizer Cargo With High Average Discharge Rate Per Day

Karaikal Port Pvt. Ltd. (KPPL) South India’s fastest growing gateway ports, announced highest Average discharge rate per day of fertilizer from Supramax vessel – M.V.Murgash which was imported by Indian Potash Limited (IPL) with a shipment size of 40,000 tonnes of Mureate of Potash (MOP). The vessel completed her cargo discharge and sailed out from Port in minimal time. By efficient way of cargo handling, KPPL could achieve the best average discharge rate per day  of 27000 tonnes.

KPPL is geographically positioned in Central Tamilnadu coast and close to delta regions of Cauvery and Vaigai basin in Tamilnadu and is the most suitable port for importing fertilizer cargo to cater the farmers’ requirement of this region.

KPPL is well connected with all destinations by Road and Rail with sufficient availability of trucks and continuous supply of BCN wagons from Southern railways for evacuating cargo from Port. KPPL has potential to handle 2 Million tonnes of Fertilizer cargo per annum with its dedicated modern infrastructure and resources.

Vital infrastructure project will boost economy and create local employment opportunities

Chennai: 20 February 2020:

Karaikal Port Pvt. Ltd. (KPPL), today welcomed the groundbreaking for a new LNG import terminal in presence of by Shri. V. Narayanasamy – Hon’ble Chief Minister of Puducherry, Shri. M. Kandasamy – Hon’ble Minister of Ports, Social Welfare and pollution Control, Puducherry and Shri. A. Anbarasu, IAS, Development Commissioner and Secretary – Ports, Government of Puducherry.

The LNG import terminal is to be built inside the breakwater at Karaikal port by global downstream gas and LNG logistics company, AG&P, who are the owners and operators of the facility. The Karaikal LNG Import Facility (“Karaikal LNG”) will be a landmark infrastructure development for the region, adding to the port’s successful operations as a center for trade in the southeast.

Strategically located140km south of Pondicherry, 280 km south of Chennai and 350km north of Tuticorin port, Karaikal Port covers 600 acres with three railway sidings and proximity to national highways, providing excellent and seamless access for customers using the port. It is also ideally located for reaching the region’s hinterland manufacturing clusters which are home to a wide range of industries including agriculture (sugar, coconut, poultry); textiles; steel, cement and engineering goods; power plants and other processing factories.

Karaikal LNG will provide natural gas to these industries, in addition to serving the city gas networks of AG&P and other city gas companies across the southeast. Truck loading bays will be built at the facility to enable delivery of LNG by AG&P to remote customers, extending the reach of the terminal to communities and industries that are outside the reach of existing gas infrastructure.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony today, Mr. GRK Reddy, Promoter Director of KPPL said, “Karaikal Port plays a crucial role in the GDP of Southeast India. We are delighted that AG&P has chosen to invest in an LNG facility at our thriving port. Karaikal LNG is an important development that will boost the region’s economy, improve socio-economic conditions for many communities through local employment, and provide industries with reliable and affordable access to natural gas as a cleaner and lower cost fuel choice.”

Mr. K. Muralidharan, CEO of KPPL said, “Karaikal LNG is a welcome development for our region that will not only accelerate industrialization, but will improve the quality of life for millions of Indians by giving them access to a clean, low cost and safe fuel for cooking at home and driving their car. Industries and commercial businesses will also be able to easily switch to LNG as their first fuel source, saving them money and helping them reduce emissions.”

KPPL is an all-weather deep-water port developed on Build, Operate and Transfer format under Public Private Partnership in terms of the concession awarded by the Government of Puducherry. It is located on the east coast of India in Karaikal within the Union Territory of Puducherry. Since commencing operations in 2009, the Port has handled over 46 million tonnes of cargo and over 1,400 commercial vessels. In the next few years, KPPL is expected to add new cargo flows to increase its cargo handling capacity to 40 MMT per year by 2025. Natural gas imports through Karaikal LNG will be a key and growing part of this capacity.

Beyond Karaikal LNG, AG&P is one of the largest international players in India’s gas sector, having been awarded exclusive rights from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to build city gas distribution (CGD) networks in 12 Geographic Areas across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Rajasthan. At the end of 8 years, the AG&P networks will offer more than 1,500 CNG stations and natural gas connections to millions of households.

Karaikal Port’s 150th Cargo Loaded Rake from its Mechanized Baulk Cargo Handling System was flagged by the General Manager of Southern Railway, Shri. R. K. Kulshrestha in the presence of Shri. K. Muralidharan, Chief Executive Officer, Karaikal Port Private Limited and Shri. D. Udaya
Kumar, Dy. Regional Manager, Southern Railways today. Karaikal Port has reached this key milestone in just 3 months from inauguration of its Mechanized Bulk Cargo Handling System.
The 150th rake which consists of 59 wagons was flagged of at Thiruvarur Railway Junction today.The Mechanized Bulk Cargo Handling System was inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Puducherry, Shri. V. Narayanasamy on 30-October-2018 at Karaikal Port.
Mechanization has improved the cargo handling efficiency of Karaikal Port and has enabled discharge of cargo with higher discharge rates of up to 40,000 MT per day and ensures that the gearless ship’s stay at Port is reduced to two and half days. As the cargo is inter carted in closed
conveyor systems, environment protection is enhanced to large extend, thus making Karaikal Port a nature-friendly and technology-enabled port in South India.

Karaikal Port Chairman rides 283 KM Cyclothon to mark Port’s 10th Anniversary

Karaikal Port, with a vision of becoming India’s preferred and responsible maritime gateway, completed its 10th year of operations on 15th Apr, 2019.
To mark this occasion Mr. GRK Reddy, Chairman and Promoter Director of Karaikal Port undertook a marathon cycling ride from Chennai to Karaikal Port on 14th April, 2019 to promote sustainable development considering the interests of all stakeholders like investors, lenders, government authorities and the society at large.

Traversing across ECR, Mahabalipuram, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Thirukadayiur, Tharangambadi and finally concluding at Karaikal, this 283 Km long expedition took just 14 hours of riding time The ride was flagged on the ECR Toll gate 13th April 2019 at 7:30 pm and reached Mahabalipuram at 9 PM and Pondicherry at 01:30 midnight. After a short break, the ride started again at 04:30 AM and reached Tharangambadi 01:30 pm. With a break the expedition started from Tharangambadi at 4: 30 PM and reached Karaikal at 5: 40 PM.
On completing the marathon ride Mr. GRK Reddy said “It’s a revealing experience to embrace the spirit of heritage and experience the beautiful country side with numerous landmarks of arts and culture. It is my closest moment with nature while experiencing strong wind under scorching sun”.
The journey was truly a remembrance of 13 years of existence of Karaikal Port – Remembering the days of construction work, the day of first vessel berthing and now the current position, how Karaikal port has grown in multiple dimensions and has empowered its economic activities of import and export.

The 10th Year Anniversary was celebrated at the port on 15th April 2019, in the presence of Employees, Villagers and Women Social Help groups. Sweets were distributed to the nearby villages to mark the occasion.

Karaikal port offers free skill training and employment program in association with L&T Handed over training selection letters for 213 candidates today.

Karaikal, January 05th 2019: Karaikal Port in association with L&T Construction Skill Training Institute conducted a selection drive to offer free skill training and employment opportunity for the youth in the regions of Karaikal, Nagapattinam and Nagore. This program is aimed at increasing the employ ability of youth and to provide them with an employment opportunity at L&T under CSR Program of Karaikal Port

The selection drive that took place on 04-Jan-2018 in Karaikal attracted more than 500 candidates out of which 212 candidates were selected for the program.

The candidates can upgrade their skills in fields such as Form work carpentry, Bar Bending & steel fixing, Masonry and Electrician courses. The selected candidates will go through a structured training of 600 hours (3 months) at L&T construction Skills Training Institute, Kanchipuram.

Candidates in the age group of 18 to 35 and with a minimum education of 5th standard can apply to this program. Certificate will be issued by CSDCI (Construction Skill Development Council of India) and Course Completion Certificate will be provided jointly by L&T and Karaikal Port Private Limited. After the successful completion of the training, the selected candidates will also be offered employment in L & T

Speaking on the occasion Mr. GRK Reddy, Chairman and Promoter Director- Karaikal Port, “Through this program, we believe that we have talented youth who can be trained to take up into the expansion plans of the existing industries coming in and around Nagore, Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts. ”

Mr. Niranjan Mishra, Principal – L &T Construction Skill Training Institute, Kanchipuram said “To prioritize the role of youth in our nation’s growth, by making them employable, we have partnered with Karaikal Port for empowering Youth in and around Karaikal, Nagore and Nagapattinam districts. We are giving training for four trades namely, Form Work Carpentry, Bar bending, Masonry and Electrician.”

Karaikal Port extends relief to victims of Gaja Cyclone

With a commitment to develop and socially support the community in and around Karaikal, Karaikal Port Private Limited (KPPL) organized relief packages to the villages badly affected by the Gaja Cyclone.

Two truckloads of relief material worth Rs. 15 Lakhs which included Tarpaulin, Sarees, Dhothi, Bedsheets and Clothes for men, women and children were distributed to the affected villages. Employees of Karaikal Port directly visited several villages like Keelaiyur, Thaiyathopu, Achukattalai, Thiruvasal, Vanamahadevi and Vella Pallam of Nagapattinam district and distributed the packages.

More than 2000 families were benefitted through this relief activity.

The relief process was guided and supported by the Karaikal District Collector Mr. Kesavan, Nagapattinam District Collector Mr. Suresh Kumar, Ms. Devaki – Special Officer Centralized Relief materials camp Nagapattinam and CSR team of Karaikal port lead by Mr. Rajeswar Reddy – GM, Karaikal Port.

Keeping the commitment to make the Port an environment friendly one, Karaikal Port inaugurated “Mechanized Bulk Cargo Handling System” built with an investment of Rs 600 Cr, in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Pondicherry, Shri. V. Narayanasamy today.

Mechanization will improve the cargo handling efficiency of Karaikal Port. This will enable discharge of cargo with higher discharge rates of up to 40,000 MT per day and will ensure that the gearless ship’s stay at Port is reduced to two and half days. As the cargo is inter carted in closed conveyor systems, environment protection is enhanced to large extend, thus making Karaikal Port a nature-friendly and technology-enabled port in South India.

Mr. GRK Reddy Chairman and Promoter Director, said “Through Mechanization, we offer an improved bulk handling system for bulk shipments at our port. This improved efficiency of port operations through mechanization helps in faster turnaround of ships arriving at Karaikal and also our cargo dispatch rates will increase significantly by Rail or Road.”

“This fully automated Bulk Handling System would help better discharging of cargo from ships through Ship Unloaders and dispatch the cargo through Wagon loading and Truck loading stations via Conveyors system with a capacity 4,000 TPH, facilitating faster turnaround of vessels, rakes and trucks.” he added.

The state-of-the-art infrastructure for Mechanized Bulk Cargo Handling system at the port includes 2 Stacker-Reclaimers and belt conveyor system of 5.7 km.

The port has handled 55 MMT of Cargo since operations and has been reaching out to regional and international markets through its world-class service and facilities at economical cost.

Mechanization is expected to increase the capacity utilization of the port along with strengthening of the port infrastructure and increasing the berth productivity for handling Vessels at the port.

With excellent rail and road connectivity to its industrial belts and markets of Tamil Nadu, the mechanized project will up the volume of cargo handled at the port. The port is also planning to have expansion projects including addition of warehousing facilities and has adequate land availability to make it the prime destination for Investments.

Karaikal Port, India’s most Preferred and Responsible maritime gateway has invested 600 Cr in Mechanization for Bulk Material handling system, which will increase productivity, improve economy and vastly improve the protection of environment.

Mechanization will improve and enhance the bulk cargo handling at the port in an automated and efficient manner. This process will offer the most convenient trade and efficient operations for the East Coast of India.

“We have taken steps to enhance the efficiency of the port by integrating the mechanization process for smooth and environment friendly bulk cargo handling. Inspite of a dip in the GDP growth, we have invested 600 cr in Mechanization for improving the port operations. We believe this is our biggest responsibility towards the people especially in Karaikal and Nagapattinam districts.” said Mr. GRK Reddy, Promoter Director of Karaikal Port.

FLSmidth & Co, Rice Lake Weighing Systems India Limited, ABB, Chennai Radha Engineering, ASB Infra and Siemens are involved in the implementation process, supply, and integration and commissioning of the equipments under this project.

The mechanization envisages direct unloading through a ship unloader and handled through a conveyor automatic stacker-cum-re-claimer. The process helps in the auto-loading system into wagons and trucks. The mechanization procedures will ease the bulk cargo handling steps in the port, by ensuring zero handling loss.

Through mechanization, the port is expected to facilitate de-congestion, faster discharge of bulk cargo, strengthening and deepening of berths -3 rd and 4th, faster turnaround of vessels, reducing supply chain and logistics cost of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry states.

Karaikal port supports students to Showcase innovative science models at expo Varichikudy 20th July, 2018

Over 700 Students exhibited their Science Models at Government Polytechnic College, Varichikudy at Karaikal as part of Dr Kalam Innovation Kids Expo organized by Dr Kalam Science and Technology Foundation, an initiative by Karaikal Port.

The aim of the expo was to aspire young minds in the field of Science and Technology. Karaikal Port collaborated with Space Kids India and launched Dr Kalam Science and Technology Foundation to inculcate learning in young minds in an interesting and innovative way. This partnership is expected to create Social Scientists in and around Karaikal, who would grow up to support the overall regional development.

More than 700 projects from 100 government and private schools from Nagapattinam, Nagore and Karaikal were on display on the expo day. The expo had Innovative and Creative projects that mainly focused on range of topics like Robotics, Aerospace, Electronics, Agriculture, Chemistry, Physics and other Innovative Topics.

Speaking on the occasion, GRK Reddy, Chairman and Promoter Director-Karaikal Port, who initiated this venture, shared his appreciation for the talented kids “We are glad to be part of this initiative – Dr Kalam Science and Technology Foundation which organized this expo. We believe that students are naturally inquisitive and we should create opportunities to nurture their talents and help them build their scientific temper. We look forward to continue our efforts through this foundation, so that we will have more entrepreneurs, real thinkers and problem solvers for building a better nation.”

Karaikal Port, India’s Preferred and Responsible Maritime Gateway and Space Kidz India , a Chennai based organization that facilitates experiential learning for students in the fields of Science and Technology, today introduced a joint initiative “Dr. Kalam Science & Technology Foundation” within Port vicinity at Karaikal.

Ms. GeethaAnandhan, MLA T.R Pattinam and Mr. R. Kesavan, IAS, KaraikalDistrict Collector were the chief guest and Guest of Honor respectively for the occasion.

Speaking about the benevolent initiative, GRK Reddy, Promoter Director &Chairman, Karaikal Port said, “The foundation is a tribute to DrAPJ Abdul Kalam’s dream of inspiring and ignitingyoung aspiring minds in latest technology, space exploration to become next generation scientists, engineers and real-world problem solvers and entrepreneurs for social inclusion.”

“Dr.Kalam Innovation Kids Expo” will be the first project amongst other future initiatives for “Dr. Kalam Science & Technology Foundation.” The expo will be organized on July 20th 2018 at Government polytechnic college Varichikudy, wherein young studentsfrom 6th to 12th standard classes from Karaikal and Nagapattinamcan submit their science projects.
